Peer Group Chat // Building Trust // Thursday 7th September 2023, 7-8:30PM AEST

Hey everyone!

On Thursday 7th of September 2023, we will be holding a Peer Group Chat on the topic of Building Trust.

amber22_2-1693530272556.gif

Trust is a vital pre-requisite to being vulnerable and sharing with others. Let’s come together to talk about our experiences with trust, and how we might be able to develop trust to enable safe and open sharing.

The event start times across Australia are below:

Western Australia: 5pm
Northern Territory & South Australia: 6:30pm

Queensland, New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory, Victoria & Tasmania: 7pm

For anyone unfamiliar with Peer Group Chats, each focuses on a specific topic and is guided by Peer Workers with lived experience of mental health issues and recovery, &/or caring for someone with complex mental health. A counsellor is also present as a moderator to help ensure a safe environment for individuals and the group. It is a space for us as peers to share our stories and experiences, and connect with those who are going through something similar.

Anyone is welcome to join! Tagging some members who may be interested below:

Hi Everyone

Something that came up in our discussion is trusting yourself, alongside trusting others. What I would be curious to hear from anyone who would like to share is; how do you think trusting yourself differs from trusting others? Also, how is it similar?

A few extra resources you might like to review in considering this are Brené Brown’s BRAVING acronym and Marble Jar metaphor for trust.

@TideisTurning  Trusting myself, differs from trusting others because, I trust that I will take appropriate action to help myself recover, if someone betrays my trust.

Re: Peer Group Chat // Building Trust // Thursday 7th September 2023, 7-8:30PM AEST

Hmm, been thinking about this for the last couple of hours.

I have a couple of levels of trust.

1. I’ve just met them. Do they seem like a decent enough person? I know first impressions can be bad, but do they look like a decent person? The type of person I’d feel comfortable to water my plants whilst I’m away? (So yeah, the “I trust you, a little bit” level)

2. I’ve known you for a little while now. Are they the type of person that I’d trust to grab something from Woolies.
3. hey, we’re pretty close. I’d feel comfortable telling you bits and pieces about life.

4. We’re super close, if I had a child/pet I’d trust you looking after it for weeks. We’ve probably shared some vulnerable moments of life.

now, how do I trust myself?
ok let’s be honest, I ask myself that question sometimes.

Now, that’s a tricky one! I struggle with decision making normally, when it’s a decision of “do I trust myself doing this?” it’s usually one of two things - I overthink it, or I just judge instantly by the vibe.

So there’s that “I just met you and I think I can trust you” thing coming into effect right there 😅

Re: Peer Group Chat // Building Trust // Thursday 7th September 2023, 7-8:30PM AEST

That makes total sense @Glisten! You are in control of you, so it's highly likely that you are someone you can rely on to do what you need.

I really like your distinction between different levels of trust, @_PixieSolstice_ . I feel like what you said also illustrates a little how trust is something that may need to be built, even with ourselves!

Re: Peer Group Chat // Building Trust // Thursday 7th September 2023, 7-8:30PM AEST

Caught my eye and couldn’t ignore but reflect a bit.

trust is very important for me, it can relate to honesty and authenticity . Also when there is ambiguity with someone while a first bad impression is often a dealbreaker I find my shiny new “mental health skills” or values, assertiveness and boundaries to be good. I think trusting myself also plays a role among these.
