@DreamyI'm not sure what service this was, but I would say they weren't very well trained and not that great at their job.  I don't want to throw anyone under the bus here, especially not know all of the context, but just from the outside it seems to me that it wouldn't be that hard to just say "It sounds like it such an incredibly difficult situation for you. I'm sorry, but I don't really know what to suggest to you, but i'm here to listen to you if you think that would help you right now."

 

It doesn't seem like that difficult a thing to come up with, even without any training.  I'm sorry they were so dismissive towards you.
