Maybe that's part of the problem, @tyme ? The government just giving people money when they really ought to be giving them jobs, then making out that the problem's been resolved because having money's all that matters.

Leaving aside all the mental wellbeing factors of making sure citizens have meaningful jobs - even in a strictly financial sense, it's crummy policy. The recipiants are probably worse off, financially, recieving government money then they would be recieving a proper pay check for full-time work; and of course, it's a drain on the economy, which inevitably makes itself known in our bills and other expenses.

Governments (of both sides) have been promising since the year dot to create jobs for the unemployed. I wish one of them would actually follow through on those promises.
