@HenryX Your writing is well thought out and considerate as usual. I like the discursive and the imaginative side of this thread. In another life I wanted to be an English teacher, but ended up doing other things ....
In fact, I think some of the quality of discussion here beats what is happening in mainstream & social media hands down, with all the cultural nitpicking, over generalisations and raising of hysteria. We are supposed to be the mad ones ... Hhhhhmmmmm!
Aaaaaaah @Sophia1
I have a big watery side, loved reading about selkies 15 years ago and also been known as Fuzzy Mermaid as a kid irl! Do not worry mods, that person will not be likely to ever look on this site ....
I also identify with animals a great deal, hence my time at the zoo. In many ways they have given me more company than humans in my journey on the planet so far. Humans have been too judgmental. It is also more than just the ownership aspect of having a pet for one's own gratification. I am interested in a far more naturalistic approach regarding habitat and natural inclinations, nor just the nerdy behaviourist aspect. I never had a pet growing up, tho I made sure my children did, but try to be aware of the human imprint as well as the oft quoted footprint tossed about these days.
Ha ha! No I dont believe trilobites rate in the communication department, but they signify the early forms of life and perhaps the beginning of creation ....and left a range of prints ... here and there .... scattered among the lithosphere ....
So Nutty Bub in the WWWomb step cautiously around them. Stunned by their discovery and overwhelmed by all the possible meanings ....
A bat called Horace flurries deep in the cave while Sooty the furry cat, comfortable with being black and seeing in the dark sees even more than the Gumnut Baby .... not sure he wants to be a companion animal though ... far too independent for that ....

Dear friends
Something completely random and quite nice.
Sometimes I need a break from the heaviness of MI or the serious stuff on SANE forums. Even coming up with little Sooty plots can be tiring.
So just to break it up I'd like to report I've done 2 good deeds today. I try for 4 random acts of niceness in a year. So I'm half way there in one day
I donated $10 to a local cat shelter raffle; and shock, then donated $10 to a local environmental appeal (trying to keep a cable car off Mt Wellington/Kunanyi in Hobart).
Ok, not a lot of money, but I'm not quite in Elon Musk territory financially.
Moral of the story: Sooty loves to be naughty, but sometimes he can actually be quite nice if he tries really hard.
PS - no cable cars in the secret garden/woodland/vale/forest or wherever we are - lol

A quick addendum
Selkies, wandering wombs and Long Tan all in one day's worth of posts. A lot to digest, and no idea where to start.
@Appleblossom is so right, this thread is so very interesting and much better than social media mumbo jumbo.
@Sophia1 you rock.
@HenryX I think you can be officially or unofficially "the professor".
But who is Horrace the bat, if anyone? I quite like bats - heaps of fun to scare when they are asleep and Sooty is bored. Nothing like a quick swipe with a little paw to wake them up.
I should also confess, all this water talk...well cats and things in water are well, mesmerising to naughty cats. Selkies are water creatures - ok, they are seal-like and therianthropic, but anything that swims in water gets Sooty's attention. Way too much fun to be had when Sooty is reminded of the time he washed up on a beach, after falling overboard from Sigurd's viking ship near the Orkney Islands and a selkie helped him recover from his ordeal. But that's for another day.
There's a bit of a story with Sigurd - he was a viking jarl, and he and Ragnar Hairybreeks (another viking jarl) sort of had a falling out in about the 9th or 10th century. Of course, Sooty being a drinking buddy of Dolgen the welsh dwarf king heard all the details and was quite determined to visit the Orkney islands. Something about lots of gold and mermaids peeked his curiosity. Pity about the storm, and Sooty being washed away until a selkie helped him to shore on a forlorn beach.....

Inspired by a selkie perhaps?

Yes @Sophia1 "Just Do it Online" they say - To save them $$, paper, time & effort.
Except that Online Systems often Freeze, or just plain Don't Work at all....
It takes so much longer to work out how to Navigate some of these Online Systems.
Much quicker to just write it on a Paper Form (& not get Lost in Online Menus) - "Oh No" they say, "You cannot use a Paper Form - That's Not Eco-Friendly"....
Who ever said a Computer was "Eco-Friendly"? - Most Computer Parts are Not Biodegradable.
They won't break down, & turn to soil, like paper does....
Plus we have to print stuff out from the Computer anyway - Like me having to Print out 30 Pages of Census Job Printouts this afternoon, at my own Expense.
The Only One who Saves on Paper are Businesses etc - By Refusing to Print a Bill or Form & Mail it to you.
You then have to Pay $$/ Bear the Expense - To print it out Yourself....
Eco-Friendly, my B....EE....P (Censored).
I'm an Environmental Manager - This is all Fake Environmental Nonsense....
Well Really It's all about Economic Rationalism - Cutting Costs, & putting Costs onto the Consumer (Customer) instead.
It has Nothing to Do with the Good of the Environment.....
Sorry, I've stepped Down off my Soap Box now...

Giving to others is what actually means something
as you pointed out... affordability...
where the amount might make a difference to one's budget....that is not just a donation...
that is love for humanity...
a beautiful act of kindness from the 💜
my unwell son on a disability pension is donating often to charities and causes.. he no longer uses the concept of budgeting.. his heart 💜 is in the right place. ...
