Re: Coin Collectors' Corner

Hi Coin Fans and @Mustang67 wow, that’s a mouthful for a magnifier but at 1000x I garner it was powerful. The micro world is incredible…I just dive down a rabbit hole in it and can lose time : ) It’s a lovely gentle little hobby. Cool to start setting up your primary collection - I’ve just spent a bit of time doing that and it’s interesting which years are have excess and which years have none : ) kinda telling in itself. But helps to know what I’m looking for now and when something truly special pops up. I’ve only been collecting for about a year and probably have about 100 coins all up.

I would like to start a series folder and an error folder. But in case I have a stroke or something I think it makes sense to write what the errors are and attach with the coin so I am beginning to like the cardboard with staples option - just have to find out what plastic they use either side. It’s probably a pretty achievable next mission : )

Photographing my coins is embarrassingly low tech. It involves a magnifying glass between my phone camera and the coin…I move it back and forth and am glad there’s no one watching me with my neck cranked, holding my breath and trying to get the right angle lol. Your way sounds more comfortable and civilised : )

Which coins are people thinking of entering the ballot for tmrw?

Re: Coin Collectors' Corner

I’m loving the Animals Remembrance and Countdown! What a classic! I guess the countdown coin will sell out pronto!

Re: Coin Collectors' Corner

Hi @Harmonium yes it is a mouthful for the magnifier. I forgot to tell you, it also allows you to take photos and videos of the coins. It is awesome for finding errors.

I currently use the Lighthouse 2x2 Self Adhesive Matrix cardboard holders. But I have read that after a couple of years the glue doesn't stick any longer and if you go to take one out of an album, your coin could fall out and be damaged.

The only thing to be aware of in the staple version, is that if you store these with one behind the other, the staple from the card in front, can damage the coin behind it.

A place called The Purple Penny recommend these SAFLIP ® double pocket flips

So you can put the coin in one side and insert cardboard in the other side once you have put the information regarding the coin on it. This is what I am looking at doing once I sort my collection out.

I love your explanation of when you try to take coin photos, that would be funny to watch. I have trouble taking them on my phone, as my hands and body tends to shake at times. So I end up holding my breath and taking it as quick as possible. 🤣😂📷

I will be trying to get the Count Down coin and he normal $2 purple poppy coin in the ballot. How about you?

Re: Coin Collectors' Corner

Hi @Mustang67 you must be a night owl or middle of the night wake-up’s like me. I’m so excited for the Ballot tmrw! I’m’ve already noticed pre-sales peaking in anticipation for the two coins you mentioned. So I’m also going to visit the post office first thing tmrw to purchase if I can - just in case I miss out in the ballot. I can cancel the ballot if I am able to buy in person…so I’m making sure to get both coins. The purple poppy looks wild. And Countdown! What’s not to love! I think it will be one to watch for sure. Bigger than Bluey? Maybe not. But it has potential. I love watching how these EQL ballots turn out.
I think Bluey just had international appeal and timing was hot with the show on air around the world. Shame Blinky Bill and Skippy didn’t rock the boat - maybe they should dust them off and put them back on air : )

I will explore the options you mentioned for the coin books/cards and figure out a system. Thank you for the tip!

Your magnifier sounds mind blowing!

I’m going to start off with an old fashioned photograph loupe we used back in the day when proofs were a thing and build up from there. I have a microscope but it was too magnified and I couldn’t make out much and not possible to photograph - so massive drawback. Seems a loupe might be a nice little low tech/low cost option for starters.
Okay, well better get tucked in so I can get to the post office bright and early.
Happy chatting!

And good luck in the ballot Coin Fans!

Re: Coin Collectors' Corner

So in terms of proper coin collecting I'm probs not your guy but I still like anything shiny, and always enjoy seeing others' enjoymnent of stuff so always appreciate a tag!!

Re: Coin Collectors' Corner

Hi @Harmonium how did you go with the ballot and post office.

I won both the 2024 $2 "C' Mintmark Purple Poppy War Animals Remembrance UNC Carded Coin & the 2024 50c 50th Anniversary Of Countdown Coloured Unc Coin In Card

And now that I have had a chance to see the 2024 Purple Poppy $2 ‘C’ Mintmark Coloured Fine Silver Proof Coin I really like it. But I have to many bills to pay at the moment.  But if I can find one once my bills are paid in a couple of weeks time, then I will buy one.

And yes I am a night owl. I have trouble sleeping sometimes because of my CPTSD, and I hate just laying there, so I usually get up and watch TV or play on my phone. But the down side of that is I sleep in until late morning or early afternoon.
