The course that I was looking at is recognised here in Australia for teaching certain student groups and categories, eg migrants learning English as a 2nd language, and can be used for teaching students in many countries, online.
The TESOL/TEFL programme at AVSE in Phnom Penh, Cambodia {Australian Vocational Skills & Education: TESOL in Cambodia} is accredited by the Australian Government and internationally recognised.
"Australian Vocational Skills & Education (AVSE-TESOL) provides the qualifications and skills that are needed for teaching English in Vietnam, Cambodia, and in other countries. Our Australian government-accredited and internationally recognised TESOL programme in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, or Phnom Penh comprises 150 hours of in-class study over four weeks, including 20 hours of hands-on teaching experience, with local students engaged in ongoing English language classes." {An extract from the AVSE website}
I believe, because of the covid situation, that the course may be available online, which option I am currently considering. Presumably, arrangements will have to be made for the practical component. I believe that, in a similar way to which Australian students are provided lessons online, that may also be possible with the AVSE-TESOL course.
The two most recognised and, probably, well-known qualifications are:
“CELTA (Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults), and,
“Trinity TESOL (Trinity College London Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)”
both of which are accredited by the respective universities and are widely recognised by employers and by official bodies.
The University underwritten courses are priced at a relatively high level.
The AVSE-TESOL course, is of a very high standard, that compares favourably with the other two qualifications, and seems to be very widely recognised, particularly in the South East Asian region.
However, Governments and academic institutions in some countries, such as Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and China, require a separate university qualification, which I do not have. However, there are many other countries and online services through which work is available.
I had initially considered Cambodia because of a friend, who had worked there, and through him, various contacts are available. It is certainly a country that has experienced huge internal upheaval and currently is under pressure from outside its borders. These issues, and the fact that quite a few students from Cambodia consider Australia as a place to undertake higher education, contributed to my thoughts with regard to the possibility of teaching work in Cambodia. On the other hand, I am free to travel where opportunities are available. As I get older though, and with deteriorating physical capacity, It is becoming apparent that it would be safer to work from home via computer.
That's the story of plans that I had being changed by the virus.
