Re: pregnancy and on anti psychotics
Hi @sally26
it is probably best you discuss this with your prescribing doctor and get their expert advice!
It may be that you need to alter either the medication, or dose during pregnancy, but again this is best managed by the doctor assisting with your care. Please consult with them as soon as possible to avoid any potential harm.
Best wishes

Re: pregnancy and on anti psychotics
I cared for a baby from 6 weeks old to 16 years who had heavy doses of anti-psychotics whilst in utero. The mother was dosed up in mhu before she knew she was pregnant. Mum also was fed by drips fulltime in hospital at end of pregnancy as she wouldnt eat. which is why I was given custody so young. She had been cared for by mum, gran and nurses for 6 weeks and was somewhat settled when she came to me, via DHS.
Bubs was as normal as the next kid. But I am the daughter of 2 people diagnosed with schizophrenia so I am not objective. I did a lot of baby massage and tactile baby gymn and play groups, before it was really popular, and maintained access with biological mother, whilst father was cutting her off. At one stage I thought she may have been autistic as it was hard to manage to get her to school from grade 2-4, but I didnt pursue autism idea heavily.
She is now a grown up utterly gorgeous alpha female... travelled around world a few times ... gave me hell ... it wont be easy ... but dont make it harder on yourself than you need to ... work with clinicians ... each mother and child are unique.
If you need some meds work with docs on it .. but dont beat yourself up if it actually grounds you enough to be able to do the mothering. The woman I mention didnt want any responsibility. Gave away another baby too and is still a 10 year old in a 70 year olds body.
Good luck

Re: pregnancy and on anti psychotics
Hi @sally26
It's great that you've raised these questions as we know how terribly difficult it can be for women to make decisions about taking medication during pregnancy for fear of potential harm to their unborn child. It's not clear from your post whether you are currently pregnant. Either way, having a discussion with a specialist health professional about your current medications; your ongoing mental health well-being and the safety of the baby is vital. It's really important that any decisions you make about your medications are done in collaboration with a specialist health professional. PANDA's Helpline 1300 726 306 can help with finding you a specialist professional in addition to talking to you about any concerns or fears you might have about having a baby.
Thanks for sharing such an important topic.
