sleep talking/other behaviours in adulthood

hi everyone,

there has been this issue on my mind and i am unable to find much information about it online. i want to know if anyone else has heard or knows of this condition and what it really means. i also want to know what i can do to help here.

here is my story: my husband has depression and anxiety with a history of a psychotic episode which was managed very well with medication. he is off meds now but his symptoms of depression and anxiety have increased. he has always had these issues since childhood however i think he is impacted alot more now than before. in the past few months, he has been increasingly talking in his sleep and asking me questions in his sleep, his eyes are wide open and he appears wide awake however in the morning when i ask him about it he doesnt remember anythign about it.

what concerns is this, last night i woke up because of some pain on my thigh, i realised he was slapping me on my thigh, pushed me around and rolled back to the other end of the bed and fell asleep. this freaked me out and i am not sure what dream he was acting out, if any. he has never been abusive towards me in any way since we have been together ie 6 years. he doesnt even raise his voice let alone even think about physically hitting me.

i havent told him about last night and i am not sure if i should, i know he feels great shame and guilt at putting me through a tough time with his symptoms and i dont want to cause more stress for him. the other issue is he is against any medication or counselling and is refusing to seek help everytime we talk about it. i feel like the bad guy who keeps on pushing him to do something about his symptoms and he is resisting back.

i really dont know what else to do and how to make sense of this new issues ie last night.

please let me know what everyone thinks.

thanks heaps in advance

Re: sleep talking/other behaviours in adulthood

It seems like your husband may possibly have a REM sleep disorder.

Are you able to go to a Sleep Specialist to do an overnight sleep study?

Hopefully your husband will be open to this as it's not going to a Psychiatrist and he doesn't have to worry that Psychiatric type medicines will be "pushed at him".

Some people get anxiety and depression due to sleep dysfunction,so hopefully if he can get sleep fixed,it may have some impact on his mood as well.

Hi Ivana,

thank you for your reply; it sounds like a great idea. i am going to talk to him about this and hopefully he will agree to have it checked out.

Hi @tryintokeepsane,

I know you posted a few weeks ago, but I just wanted to check to see how are things going? Was your husband open to seeing a sleep specialist?

Hope you're well,

CherryBomb
