Query: Paranoid Personlity Disorder

After 10 years of various diagnoses, counseling, up and down, my young adult son has been recently diagnosed with paranoid personality disorder.

Has anyone had experience with someone with this disorder?  Cannot find much information about it online. His behavior is very similar to Borderline Personality Disorder (which sometimes seems like a catchall diagnosis).

Hi Waves,

Welcome to saneforums!

I don't have any personal experience with PPD, and you are right there's not much informational available on it either.

I'm not sure what you're state you're in but you could contact Spectrum. They are an organisation in Victoria that specialise in personality disorders, and they may be able to point you to some relevant resources.

Otherwise, SANE also has some factsheets that might be helpful for you. It's great that you're looking up information about you son's diagnosis. I think also ooking up additional information  (e.g., treatments, advice for carers and families) can be useful too.

Re: Query: Paranoid Personlity Disorder

Hi waves,

I too don't have much information on PPD. As per Cherry, if you can tell us what state you live in, we can offer you some referrals to organisations that may be able to help you.

I wonder if there is anyone else out there who might be able to offer some comments?

Re: Query: Paranoid Personlity Disorder

I havn't had expérience regarding this disorder itself, however i can tell you that genetically there are no clear lines between ppd, schizoaffective disorder and schizophrenia.
In addition,Schizophrenia and Autism has also been found to have overlapping genes.

Unfortunately, most doctors have fallen into the pattern of labelling/ginseng labels, rather than on person centred treatment.
This ends up in a person receiving different labels, depending on which Psychiatrist they see and that Psych's point of view, and often little or no effective treatment.

Your son may benefit from Cognitive remediation with a Psychologist but this is rare in Australia.
He might be able to achieve some success with changing his cognition and how he interprets certain events or peoples actions.
It would have to be with someone he likes and trusts though.

What is your sons opinion regarding receiving this diagnosis?
