Coping in the emergency department

Sometimes in mental health crisis's we end up in the emergency department. And that totally ok, being safe is important.

but how do we cope with our crisis while waiting?

What are some helpful strategies you have found useful during your stay in the department?

I often get stuck in the emergency room waiting room overnight due to the fact there is no mental health team 24/7 where I live. I'm really struggling being here tonight. My usual strategies of listening to music isn't really working so I'm wondering if there is anything else I should try. Please note my cocentration and attention is limited due to being in crisis. I feel trapped and stuck.

I wish lifeline text was 24/7 coz I could really use someone to talk to. Are there any other online options as I cant really call someone due to the nature of a waiting room.

Re: Coping in the emergency department

Hi @The-red-centaur - I'm sorry you were/are in crisis and needed to go to the emergency room. Did you go home without being seen by the doctors?

Re: Coping in the emergency department

@NatureLover I was seen medically but I was just over it yo wait for psych.

Re: Coping in the emergency department

@The-red-centaur so sorry you were over waiting (which I can understand). Do you think you can hold on till tomorrow for your ED specialist appointment?

Re: Coping in the emergency department

Isn't it awful that you're in "emergency department" surrounded by medical professionals, waiting for off duty different medical professional, and you say:
"I'm in crisis "
" I feel trapped "
"I could really use someone to talk to"
I'm disgusted the way you were treated. I've endured the same, several times, even told I was actually a "waste of resources" once. Ha, so much for encouraging good health - so unprofessional, so bloody ignorant.. I Don't blame you for going home - but are you safe?

Re: Coping in the emergency department

@NatureLover idk im gonna call my case manager when she starts.

@Former-Member the triage nurse was nice...but it's just the stupid system. I was tired and when 6am came I just had enough. Safe? Idk.

Am worried that you might not be safe, @The-red-centaur . That's good you're going to call your case manager this morning... I hope you can continue to be safe.

@NatureLover I ended up arranging to spend the day with my best mate. We are going to go shopping.

OK, that sounds good, @The-red-centaur . I hope you get good distraction from your troubles and enjoy the company 🙂
